Unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS on iOS 4: Detailed Instruction

 
This is a guide that will help you to jailbreak your iPhone 3G and 3GS on the new 4.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows and iTunes 9.2. The Mac version of this software is here.

Your device will be hacktivated if you don’t use an official carrier.

Step # 1

 
You need to make a new folder on your desktop and call it Pwnage.

Now download RedSn0w from here and add it to your Pwnage folder. You should also download the latest 4.0 firmware (see the link below) and add it to the Pwnage folder as well.

Extract the redsn0w executable from the RedSn0w zip file into the same folder.

Now you need to connect your iPhone to your PC. When you do so, launch iTunes.
Choose your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. This will help you to avoid wasting space on your gadget.

Go to the Pwnage folder on your desktop. Now choose the firmware ipsw. Press the Choose button to proceed.

Once your iTunes finishes updating the device to the desired firmware, open your Pwnage folder and launch the redsn0w app from the redsn0w folder you have extracted earlier.

When RedSn0w opens, press the Browse button.

Choose the firmware ipsw that is in your Pwnage folder. Now press Open.

At this step you are able to choose the jailbreak options you wish to use.

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users. If you plan to use it, make sure you have selected Cydia. For this guide we need to also choose Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo. When you choose each custom logo option, you will see a dialog box asking you to choose the image. Locate the image you want to use and click the Open button.
 
*Keep in mind the following rules for boot logos: RGB or Grayscale with Alpha channel and dimensions below 320×480. If you want to use the Digital Unlocking images, you can download them here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

By now RedSn0w should have chosen to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you don’t want multitasking, it’s better to deselect this function because it makes your iPhone 3G run very slow.

Press the Next button to proceed.
